Why We Must Eradicate Diet Culture

Presented By:
Dr. Erin Elfant, Ph.D.

at the
Unitarian Universalist Church
San Luis Obispo

Friday, May 19, 2023
9:30 am – 11:00 am

1.5 CE Credits*

Our Presentation

Participation in diet culture leads to worsened medical and mental health. Diet culture has a long history that is inextricably rooted in racism and disproportionately harms every marginalized group in our society. Diet culture is associated with disordered eating behaviors and poor body image. Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder will be reviewed with discussion around how diet culture impacts their etiology and treatment. Alternatives to weight-centered approaches to treating clients with weight and body concerns will be discussed. Q&A will follow presentation.

Goals:

This course is designed to help therapists identify diet culture, describe diet culture’s negative effects, and help empower our clients to have a positive, healthy relationship with their bodies.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  1. Define diet culture and name at least three reasons why it is harmful
  2. Explain how diet culture is rooted in racism
  3. Name at least one alternative approach to focusing on body weight

We look forward to having you join us for another opportunity to learn together in person. We will start promptly at 9:30am.

If you would like, arrive at 9:15am to grab some coffee/tea and snacks and say hello to your colleagues

Grievance
While the Central Coast Chapter of CAMFT makes every effort to assure fair treatment for all participants and attempts to anticipate problems, there may be occasional issues with regard to presentations/workshops which will require intervention and/or action on the part of the board. This procedural description serves as a guideline for handling such grievances.

When a participant files a grievance and expects action on the complaint, the following actions will be taken:

  1. The participant(s) will be asked to put concerns in writing (this can be in electronic form, such as an email).
  2. If the grievance concerns a presenter, the content presented by the speaker, or the style of presentation, the individual filing the grievance will be asked to put their comments in written format. The Board will then pass on the comments to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the grieved individual.
  3. If the grievance concerns a presentation/workshop offering, its content, level of presentation, or the facilities in which the workshop was offered, the Board will mediate and will be the final arbitrator. If the participant requests action, the Board will:
  • provide a credit for a subsequent presentation/workshop or
  • provide a partial or full refund of the presentation/workshop fee
