Greetings CEU Event Registrants:

The Community Counseling Center (CCC) is pleased to have your attendance and participation in the agency’s continuing education training slated for Friday, January 24th!

Please do note that there was a small error in the prior advertisement and the training is officially from 9a-4pm (check-in from 830a-9a) at the Copeland Education Pavilion/French Hospital Medical Center at 1911 Johnson Avenue in San Luis Obispo.

The training topic will be Examining the Correlation of Substance Abuse/Use, Addiction, and Trauma within the Framework of the Therapeutic Setting presented by Linda Connolly, PhD, LMFT.

This training will be an overview of the model of substance abuse/use and addiction treatment called Family Systems Therapy, with a special emphasis on the role of PTSD in addiction; explanations of use/dependency, and approaches to treatment, intervention, and prevention of substance abuse/use/addiction, and specific treatment of PTSD and substance abuse/use/addiction. 

Learning Goals:

At the end of the training, clinicians will be able to:

  1. Understand the role of the family in substance abuse/use/addiction and treatment.
  2. Identify the specific role played by PTSD in substance use/addiction and how this affects treatment.
  3. Understand the reasons for PTSD occurrence, treatment options and impact on one’s daily life and lifestyle.
  4. Name and define the major models of substance abuse/use and addiction. 
  5. Explain the impact of substance abuse/use/dependency on families, including codependency and the effects on children
  6. List and describe commonly occurring behavioral substance use addictions and how these are affected by the co-occurrence of PTSD. Define and distinguish between intervention, treatment, and prevention.
  7. Self-care:  how and why.

Clinician Learning Outcomes:

  1. Clinicians who complete this training will be able to define the role of the family in substance abuse/use addiction, treatment and co-occurring disorders.
  2. Clinicians who complete this training will be able to explain the differences between substance use, substance abuse, and substance dependence and describe the effects of PTSD on addiction symptoms.
  3. Clinicians who complete this training will take part in discussions concerning the more effective means of providing therapeutic care for victims of trauma who also have a history of abusing substances.

6.0 CE/CEUs will be offered to LMFTs, LCSWs, and LPCCs in partnership with the Central Coast CAMFT Chapter.

The cost to Community Counseling Center (CCC) volunteers is absolutely free of charge and for non-CCC clinicians the cost is $30.00 (6.0 CEUs included).

Unlicensed clinicians/providers not seeking CEUs may attend at the cost of $20.00.
