Growing Resilience: Yoga To Tone the Vagus Nerve

presented by

Elizabeth Karsh, Marriage and Family Therapist, #94680, E-RYT

There is much research, particularly that of Steven Porges’  Polyvagal Theory, confirming that a well-toned vagus nerve is an important factor in our ability to regulate our emotions and bounce back after stressful experiences. Our capacity to self-regulate is vitally important in our relationship with ourselves and others, and assists in our ability to maintain attention. The state of our vagus nerve can be measured through our heart rate variability – the tracking of time between heartbeats. Strengthening our heart rate variability allows us to address life’s inevitable ups and downs with improved flexibility and resilience.

This online presentation will provide:

  1. An overview of the autonomic nervous system and, in accordance with the Polyvagal Theory, the role of the vagus nerve as the main component of the parasympathetic nervous system.
  2. Restorative, experiential practice including movement (asana), breathwork (pranayama), mudras (hand positions), and mantras (sound). The restorative practice will be centered on toning the vagus nerve to increase heart rate variability, activate the rest-and-digest aspects of the parasympathetic nervous system, and to facilitate deep relaxation.
  3. Both aspects of the presentation focus on the vagus nerve’s role in strengthening our ability to bounce back after stressful events through practices to regulate heart rate and increase heart rate variability.

Goals

This presentation is designed to help therapists gain an understanding of the role the vagus nerve plays in the autonomic nervous system, and to learn specific practices to assist in strengthening heart rate variability and growing resilience.

The yoga poses are gentle and appropriate for all participants.  Modifications will be provided. Participants should:

  • dress comfortably to allow for movement
  • be in a space appropriate for standing and moving
  • have space to comfortably lie down and extend limbs in all directions
  • have privacy and strong internet connection

Necessary props:

  • 2-3 folded blankets or towels
  • a chair or couch
  • Optional: a yoga mat and eye pillow

Handouts will be sent after the presentation.
